Things to do in Greece

Things to do in Greece cover an extraordinary range, far beyond the postcard clichés of ruins and beaches.

This is a country where you can swim off a white-sand beach in the morning, wander through a 2,500-year-old archaeological site by lunchtime, and be sitting in a mountain village taverna by sunset.

Greece’s experiences are shaped as much by geography as by history, with over 220 inhabited islands, a vast and varied mainland, dramatic coastlines, mountain ranges, wetlands and some of Europe’s most important ancient sites.

Activities are not staged for tourists, they are woven into daily life, from evening promenades and open-air cinemas to religious festivals, local food markets and village celebrations.

What to Expect

Beach and water activities

Beach experiences in Greece vary widely. Some beaches are organised with sunbeds, cafés and water sports, while others are completely undeveloped and reached by footpath or boat. Swimming and snorkelling are easy almost everywhere and water clarity is excellent, particularly around pebbly beaches.
Sailing, kayaking, diving and wind sports are available, but usually concentrated in destinations with the right conditions rather than offered universally.

Archaeological and historical sites

History in Greece is part of the landscape, not confined to museums. Ancient ruins appear in city centres, beside roads and woven into modern towns.
Some sites are world-famous and carefully managed, others are quiet and informal with minimal signage. Most are outdoors, often exposed to heat and uneven ground, so timing and footwear matter. The experience is generally atmospheric and authentic rather than highly curated.

Food, wine and local culture

Food is one of the main things people actually do in Greece. Expect long, social meals, shared dishes and late dining hours, especially in summer.
Food tours, cooking classes, winery visits and olive oil tastings are standard, but everyday meals in tavernas are just as important. Festivals, religious celebrations and village events often become highlights without any planning.

Nature and outdoor experiences

Greece is far more diverse than its beaches suggest. Beyond the coast are mountains, gorges, wetlands, forests and traditional villages.
Hiking is excellent on both the islands and the mainland, particularly in regions like Epirus and the Peloponnese, with marked trails and relatively few crowds.

Everyday life and low-key experiences

Some of the most memorable experiences in Greece are the simplest. Evening walks, café culture, open-air cinemas and time spent in town squares are part of the daily rhythm.
