SKOPELOS

Often referred to as the ‘Mama Mia’ island or even the ‘Emerald Island’ due to its thick forests, Skopelos is a hidden gem in Greece that offers a genuine, enchanted getaway. With its verdant vistas, glistening lakes, quaint towns, and friendly locals, Skopelos beckons visitors to lose themselves in a realm where time stands still and the splendour of nature is emphasised.

Skopelos became well-known worldwide as the backdrop for the 2008 film “Mamma Mia!” The island’s vivid hues, surreal scenery, and contagious spirit made for the ideal setting for the movie. A must-see site is the famous church of Agios Ioannis Kastri, perched on a rocky ledge with views of the sea. It offers breathtaking vistas and a hint of the film’s magic.

The island is an adventurer’s paradise for those who love the great outdoors. Hiking paths meander through woodlands, olive groves, and along the shoreline.  Along the island’s immaculate shoreline, water sports like windsurfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking can be enjoyed. Snorkelers and divers are also drawn to the crystal-clear waters to discover colourful reefs, underwater caverns, and deserted beaches, coves, and caves.

Above all, Skopelos is known for its authenticity. Despite its Hollywood connection, Skopelos Town is a picture-perfect paradise with its whitewashed houses, winding cobblestone lanes, and quaint balconies covered in bougainvillaea. Delicious Greek cuisine is served at neighbourhood tavernas and restaurants, allowing guests to enjoy the island’s culinary gems, which include fresh fish, local wines, and cheese pies from Skopelos.

What to expect

Skopelos is greener, quieter and more traditional than Skiathos. Expect pine forests, blue coves, pretty villages and a slower pace. It is known for its scenic landscapes and Mamma Mia! filming locations.

Accommodation is spread out, and the island suits travellers wanting relaxation, scenery and culture rather than nightlife.

It is beautiful and quite authentic.
