Sporades Islands

Just off the east coast of Greece, the 24 Sporades Islands (4 inhabited) are among the most pristine and undeveloped of the Greek Islands. However, with Skopelos recently featured in the film Mamma Mia and ongoing development, it may not remain a hidden gem for long.

Only four of the islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros) have permanent populations, and of them, Skiathos is the liveliest due to its international airport. Even still, it retains much traditional charm — as do the rest of the islands and especially sleepy Skyros.

Like much of Greece, the Sporades Islands spent many centuries locked in a tug of war between various empires. Overall, however, residents were generally left fairly undisturbed and carried on with traditional life through some of history’s most significant events.

Although there are several historical sites (mostly from the Byzantine Empire) to enjoy, the Sporades Islands are best for nature lovers.

There are many stunning trails and hikes through some of the prettiest and most pristine scenery in the Greek Isles — and then plenty of sandy beaches to cool off at afterward.

What to expect

The Sporades are green, pine-covered islands with clear water, good beaches and a quieter atmosphere than the Cyclades.

Expect easy ferry links between the main islands, reliable accommodation, traditional towns and strong summer tourism without the party scene.

Skiathos is the busiest and most accessible, Skopelos is more low-key, and Alonissos is the calmest and best for nature. The group suits travellers who want greenery, beaches and a relaxed pace.

Language: Greek, but most people in tourist areas speak English ( and more)

Currency: Euro

Credit Cards and ATMs: The main town has ATMs, even in mini marts, travel agencies and some hotel lobbies.  Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, and in fact, it is illegal for taxis, hotels and any business working in tourism not to accept them.

Plugs: The plugs in Greece are Type C and F. The standard voltage is 230 V, and the standard frequency is 50Hz. For many people, appliances and devices will work fine, but if you are from the USA, you will need a dual-voltage styling iron or hair dryer.
