Hydra
Hydra is one of the closest islands to Athens and is popular and unique for several reasons. Many believe it has one of the most beautiful harbours in Greece, and it is dotted with restored homes mostly owned by wealthy Athenians.
There are no cars or scooters on Hydra, which also adds significantly to its appeal, and over the years it has attracted a large number of famous artists and bohemians, including Leonard Cohen, who lived there for 20 years. It is one of the wealthiest islands in Greece, where the original ship-owning families built neoclassical mansions on the hills.
The locals fought in the Greek War of Independence, while the island’s ships and wealth supported the war.
If you don’t have time to spend a few days (or weeks) on Hydra, then it is really worth a day trip from Athens, which is quite doable.

What to expect
Hydra is one of Greece’s most distinctive islands thanks to its car free layout, polished harbour and grand stone mansions.
Expect boutique hotels, art galleries, coastal walking paths and small coves reached by foot or water taxi. The town is compact, the pace is calm and the atmosphere is refined without being stuffy. It suits travellers who value aesthetics, simplicity and culture over big beaches or nightlife.
Language: Greek, but most people in tourist areas speak English ( and more)
Currency: Euro
Credit Cards and ATMs: In Hydra Town, you can find ATM, and most places will take credit cards. In the more remote places, cash may be required.
Plugs: The plugs in Greece are Type C and F. The standard voltage is 230 V, and the standard frequency is 50Hz. For many people, appliances and devices will work fine, but if you are from the USA, you will need a dual-voltage styling iron or hair dryer.
