Lefkada
Lefkada, an island in the Ionian Sea, is a hidden paradise known for its striking blue waters, dramatic cliffs, and lush landscapes.
Unlike most Greek islands, it’s connected to the mainland by a floating bridge, making it easily accessible yet still retaining its remote charm. The coastline is breathtaking, with white limestone cliffs dropping into vivid turquoise waters, creating some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.
Home to some of the most stunning beaches in Europe, such as Porto Katsiki, Mylos and Egremni, with dramatic sheer cliffs and white sand and pebbles, the island is also full of lively villages, excellent tavernas and traditional local towns. Inland, the island’s rolling hills and dense forests hide charming villages like Karya, where stone houses and shaded squares offer a glimpse of traditional Greek life.
Sailing is a way of life here, and the island’s marinas are filled with yachts heading toward the nearby islets, including Skorpios, once owned by Aristotle Onassis.Â
Lefkada is a place where nature and culture blend seamlessly. Days are spent exploring hidden coves, hiking through pine forests, and enjoying long, leisurely meals by the sea. As the sun sets, the island glows with warm hospitality, proving that beyond its stunning landscapes, it’s a place that feels like home.

What to expect
Visitors to Lefkada can expect jaw-dropping scenery and beaches that look unreal.
The island’s west coast is lined with sheer cliffs, bright white sand and turquoise water at places like Porto Katsiki and Egremni, and the whole coastline has that Instagram-breaking glow. It is also one of the easiest islands to reach, since you can literally drive there from the mainland.Â
The atmosphere changes wildly depending on where you stay, so it depends on what you are after. There are dramatic beaches and beachfront villages, sheltered yachtie havens, bustling Lefkada Town, peaceful mountain villages, and more.
People often come for the beaches but stay for the water. Sailing, island-hopping, snorkelling and boat hire are everywhere, and nearby islands such as Meganisi and Skorpios make for perfect day trips. Food is straightforward and excellent, built around fresh fish, slow-cooked meats, local wine, and olive oil so good you will definately take some home.
Prices are generally kinder than on islands like Santorini or Mykonos, especially for beachfront stays.
Summer gets busy, and parking near the big beaches can be a full-contact sport, but visit in June, early July or early October, and Lefkada feels close to perfect.
Overall, it combines absurd natural beauty with accessibility and authenticity, and most people leave wondering how this place is not far more famous.

How do you get to Lefkada?
There are no domestic flights from Athens to Lefkada, and Aktion airport is on the mainland in Preveza.
Most people reach the island by driving or taking the KTEL bus from Athens or Thessaloniki, then crossing the causeway. International travellers often fly into Aktion in summer and make the short road transfer across.
Do you need a car?
Pretty much. Public transport is limited, and the best beaches are scattered around the island at the bottom of steep roads. A car makes the trip far more enjoyable.
Where should I stay?
Agios Nikitas is the standout for most visitors. It is a proper seaside village with charm, great food, easy beach access and quick driving reach to the island’s best west-coast beaches. Lefkada Town and Nidri suit people who want more nightlife or boat trips, and Vasiliki is best for wind and kite surfers.
Is Lefkada expensive?
Not compared to some of the better-known Greek islands. It is generally cheaper than the big Aegean names for hotels and dining, especially outside late July and August.
